Abstract
One of the most widely used non-invasive methods for treating acne scars is the ablative fractional CO2 laser, which stimulates the induction of molecules involved in tissue repair mechanisms, but can have varying degrees of success and adverse effects. Polycaprolactone, as a biostimulator of neocollagenesis, may be a good candidate to enhance the repairing effect and reduce the adverse results of this type of laser. This work will determine the efficacy of combined fractional CO2 laser therapy with polycaprolactone 10% for the treatment of post-acne facial atrophic scars. Therefore, a quasi-experimental study was carried out, where 20 patients, men (20.0%) and women (80.0%), with a mean age of 39.1 ± 5.9 years, were evaluated, before and after combined treatment, with a count of scar type, quantity, and severity, according to the Global Quantitative Acne Scar Grading Scale. Efficacy was estimated by assessment, as well as by the degree of patient satisfaction. The most predominant Fitzpatrick phototype of the patients was type III (60.0%), and 75% presented a mild degree of severity of the post acne scar. The results indicate a significant reduction (p<0.0001) of 60% concerning the evaluation of the global quantitative scale of classification of acne scars, when comparing the indices calculated before (6.10 ± 4.03; 95% CI: 4.21–7.99) and after (2.45 ± 2.09; 95% CI: 1.47–3.42) applying the combined protocol of fractionated CO2 laser with polycaprolactone, in addition to an improvement post-treatment of skin texture, with greater volume and firmness of the same, with a high rate of satisfaction. In conclusion, this combined therapy to treat acne scars is a minimally invasive, safe, and effective method, where an appreciable clinical and aesthetic improvement of the scar could be observed.
