Abstract
Photodynamic therapy is an alternative for the treatment of facial acne thanks to its bactericidal and anti-inflammatory properties. In the present work, the efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT) and 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) as a photosensitizer in mild to moderate inflammatory facial acne was evaluated. It was carried out through a case series study, which were treated with 2 sessions of PDT (blue light: 423 nm and red light: 640 nm) - 0.1% ALA at the level of the face for 10 minutes with each type of light. A total of 5 female patients were incorporated into the study, with a range between 16 and 26 years of age, the majority (80.0%) phototype IV, which presented moderate (60.0%), mild (20.0%) %) and practically no acne lesions (20.0%), according to the Global Acne Assessment Scale (GEA) score. It was evident that the number of acne lesions gradually decreased as the different sessions were applied, just as the severity of acne in the patients included in the study decreased (p=0.035) from the first session. In conclusion, PDT-ALA therapy is a safe and effective protocol for the treatment of acne, which presented a decrease in severity in 60% of patients with a significant decrease of 53% for the number of lesions and 67 % of acne severity, which led to a significant change in the decrease in the degree of acne severity in the patients incorporated into the study.
