Abstract
Cleft lip, a congenital defect affecting the union of tissues in the upper lip, poses significant challenges to patients’ quality of life, not only in terms of aesthetics but also in essential functions such as feeding and speech. Although surgical correction is the standard treatment, it often results in hypertrophic scars with both physical and emotional consequences. This study evaluated the effectiveness of a combined therapy using Erbium YAG 2940 laser and recombinant enzymes for the management of hypertrophic scars following cheiloplasty. A case series was conducted between May and September 2024, including seven patients aged 22 to 32 years, predominantly female (71.42%), with Fitzpatrick skin types III (42.86%) and IV (57.14%). All presented unilateral hypertrophic scars. The protocol involved recombinant enzyme infiltrations and laser sessions, with outcomes assessed using the Patient and Observer Scar Assessment Scale (POSAS) and the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI). Results demonstrated significant improvements in scar-related parameters, particularly pain, stiffness, and thickness, along with a general perception of enhanced quality of life. In conclusion, the combination of Erbium YAG laser and recombinant enzymes appears to be a promising strategy for the comprehensive management of postsurgical scars, offering both functional and psychosocial benefits.
